Super Friends Coloring Book (1975)
If you are of a certain age, you may have come across this great Whitman coloring book in a department store. More likely, you have seen it for sale on Ebay or at a comic-con.
This SUPER FRIENDS coloring book was published during the initial run of Hanna-Barbera's cartoon on ABC-TV. This book has a published date on the inside front cover of 1975. It features the five main Super Friends plus those Junior Super Friends Wendy, Marvin, and Wonder Dog.
In classic coloring book fashion, there is a loose story to the proceedings: the Super Friends gather together to take a hike in the woods while celebrating Superman's birthday. Then, the Sea Weedy people invade the lake and the Super Friends have to convince them to not overwhelm the environment.
Yes, it's a bit goofy. And yes, Aquaman doesn't appear with the other Super Friends in group shots as much as I would like.
However, it's still a nice collection of illustrations. The characters are spot-on in their look and feel, and really, at this time where else could you have found illustrations of Wonder Woman and Robin interacting?
Unfortunately, Whitman never came back with a Wonder Twins or Legion of Doom version. Which is a shame, because I would have colored the hell out of either or both of those!
This coloring book was recently a topic of conversation on Rob Kelly and Chris Franklin's discussion of Super Friends merchandise at the Super Friends comic-book podcast For All Mankind #17. So I thought I would share the entire 60 pages for those of you who have never owned the book.
And yes, I DID own this book as a child. However, THIS current uncolored copy I picked up on Ebay just a few years ago.
